David Stern

Professor of Education Emeritus, University of California, Berkeley/加州大学伯克利分校荣休教授

David Stern is Professor of Education Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, where he joined the faculty in 1976.   His research has focused on the relationship between education and work, reconstructing high schools, and expanding options for educating teenagers. He co-founded the College & Career Academy Support Network in 1998 and served as Principal Investigator until 2015.  From 1995-99 he served as director of the National Center for Research in Vocational Education, based at Berkeley’s Graduate School of Education.  From 1993-95 he was principal administrator in the Center for Educational Research and Innovation at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris.  He chaired the faculty committee in charge of undergraduate admissions to UC Berkeley from 2003-2005 and has been engaged in reforming admissions policy for the UC multi-campus system. He has given talks in 12 countries outside the US, published more than a hundred papers and reports, and produced nine books including: International Perspectives on the School-to-Work Transition (ed. with D. Wagner, 1999); Active Learning for Students and Teachers (ed. with G. Huber, 1997); School to Work: Research  on Programs in the United States (with N. Finkelstein, J. Stone III, J. Latting, and C. Dornsife, 1995); School-Based Enterprise: Productive Learning in American High Schools(with J. Stone III, C. Hopkins, M. McMillion, and R. Crain, 1994);Career Academies: Partnerships for Reconstructing American High Schools (with M. Raby and C. Dayton, 1992); Market Failure in Training (ed. with J.M.M. Ritzen, 1991); and Adolescence and Work: Influences of Social Structure, Labor Markets and Culture (ed. with D. Eichorn, 1989).


David Stern本科毕业于哈佛大学,博士毕业于麻省理工大学经济与城市研究专业,于1976年加入加州大学伯克利分校。他的重点研究方向包括教育与职业的关系、改善高等教育受教育机会,以及扩大青少年教育的选择等。他于1998年共同创办了College & Career Academy Support Network,并担任首席研究员直至2015年。1995年至1999年,他担任设立在伯克利教育学院的美国国家职业教育研究中心主任。1993年至1995年,他担任经济合作与发展组织(OECD)教育研究与创新中心主任。2003年至2005年,他担任伯克利本科招生管理委员会主席,并参与了整个加州大学系统招生政策的改革。他曾在美国以外的12个国家发表演讲,并发表了100多篇论文和报告,出版了包括《国际视角下的学校到职场转换》(与D. Wagner合编,1999年)在内的九本书籍。


Brief Introduction of the lectures/讲座内容简介

These three talks discuss research, policy, and practice in the US that aim to improve equity and effectiveness by making high school more fair and more real for students.  The first talk describes efforts to integrate academic and vocational education in order to prepare students for postsecondary education and also for subsequent careers.  One component of this integrated approach is direct participation by students in the world of adult professional work.  The second talk explains how work-based learning can be part of the curriculum, and describes a practice-based environmental education project called GLOBE.  The third talk describes existing inequity in access to postsecondary education and presents a proposal for a fairer method to assess high school students' performance in acquiring and using new knowledge, which is what students in postsecondary education are expected to do.


本系列讲座从研究、政策、实践等层面讨论了美国旨在提升高中公平与效益的努力。讲座一主要介绍美国高中学术教育与职业教育的整合,这种整合旨在为学生后续教育及职业生涯做好准备,其中一个做法是让学生直接参与成人的工作。讲座二将展示如何将“工作为本学习”融入高中课程,并以GLOBE(基于实践的环境教育项目)为例分享具体做法。讲座三将介绍目前中学后教育中存在的不公平现象,并提出一个更公平的方法来评估高中学生在获取和使用新知识方面的表现。
